Tonight as I was checking Hulu for updated episodes of my favorite shows I stumbled upon a new show called Portlandia. I’m hooked already and it doesn’t even start until Jan 21st. It’s a WHOLE SHOW about how wonderfully/weirdly quirky Portland Oregon is! Haha! Yes, please! I’m surprised it took them so long to do a show like this!
I always thought that Oregon was a pretty normal place. It wasn’t until I came to Texas that I realized how different it is.
The following is a list of things I thought everyone did:
- Environmental Conservation Training in Elementary School
Instead of Sex Ed we learned how to save the planet. One compost pile at a time… I first realized not everyone learned about conservation when I was in college in Texas and while brushing my teeth a girl came to the sink next to me, turned it on, wet her toothbrush, set it down, and went around the corner to the bathroom, while the water was left running. I . WAS . HORRIFIED . - Give Baby Fir Trees as Gifts / Planting Tree Field Trips
I was genuinely surprised that none of my friends in Texas had ever received a tree as a gift. - Hippie Tye-Dye Festivals
These festivals inevitably ended with a bra burning and more than a few top-less women walking around the streets; causing the news to have to blur out a considerable part of their footage. - Coffee Stands in Almost Every Parking Lot
Where do you get your coffee if not from a coffee stand?! Starbucks?? Psh! That’s so mainstream… - Anti-Styrofoam Policy
I seriously didn’t know they still MADE Styrofoam… I thought it was outlawed. - Compost / Recycling
You mean you don’t throw all your food in a pile outside, let it rot, and then put it in your garden soil? Weird. - Tree Sit In’s
Someone has to save the trees, right?
Actually, I can’t judge… I still prefer most these things day to day… except the hippie festivals and Tree Sit In’s which were just annoying. I prefer organic food (eventhough I still eat out WAY TOO OFTEN), I enjoy a good conspiracy theory, and I loathe Styrofoam. I guess once you get a dose of Oregon it never leaves you…
So, I am beyond excited for this new show! Check out the video below for a quick preview!

LOL! “All the hot girls where glasses!”
Austin is a LOT like Portland. Many of my friends have moved between the two. I guess it’s the hippie quotient that does it.
I wish I had cable to watch this show. Some of the clips are just too funny!
